Thailand defeated Indonesia 0-3 in their 2022 World Cup qualifier at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday evening.
Indonesia had its first opportunity with a corner kick in the 18th minute, but Hansamu Yama Pranata's shot cleared the crossbar. Thai goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen foiled the national team's second attempt shortly before the end of the first half, when he blocked a direct shot by Bali United's Irfan Bachdim. A beautiful pass from Andik Vermansah could also not be converted to a goal.
The Garuda team started to lose its rhythm in the second half, when Indonesia's midfielders seemed to move too slowly and make bad passes, which their opponents could easily intercept. Thailand exploited this situation, with Supachok Sarachat scoring twice, and a third by Theerathon Bunmathan.
Indonesian supporters unhappy with the result started shouting for the sacking of team manager Simon McMenemy.
Indonesia has so far only won two of its 11th official matches against Thailand in the past 20 years.
