Hundreds of people gathered for a prayer vigil at the Immaculate Saint Mary Catholic Church (Gereja Katolik Santa Maria Tak Bercela) in Surabaya, East Java, on Monday to remember the victims of the Surabaya church bombings last year.
The first suicide bomb attack was carried out at the Immaculate Saint Mary Catholic Church during a Sunday mass service on May 13, 2018. Two more suicide attacks followed that morning at the Indonesian Christian Church (Gereja Kristen Indonesia) and the Surabaya Central Pentecost Church (Gereja Pantekosta Pusat Surabaya).
Two more bombs exploded at an apartment in Sidoarjo and at the Surabaya Police Headquarters the next day.
The Surabaya terror attacks were the deadliest in Indonesia since the Bali bombings in 2002. At least 28 people were killed in Surabaya and nearby Sidoarjo, including the attackers. Around 50 others were injured, several critically. The Islamic State claimed the attacks were the works of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), a local extremist group that has sworn allegiance to IS.
