Nothing Normal About Ciliwung River

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has been blamed for stalling the development of the capital city's "river normalization" blueprint, making it even harder for the sinking city to deal with heavy rainfalls during the wet season. So far, only 16.19 kilometers of the total 33.69 kilometers of riverways in the plan have been "normalized" – mud dug up from the river bottom, winding flows straightened, concrete walls installed – leaving areas around the uncompleted project to bear the brunt of the catastrophic New Year's Day floods that have so far killed 60 people.
