Jakarta. Thousands flocked to Sentul International Convention Center in Bogor, West Java, on Sunday to hear President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo deliver his new vision for Indonesia.
The strong crowd was made up mostly of Jokowi's presidential campaign volunteers who came from all over Indonesia. Many wore traditional costumes including the kebaya, sarong and Papuan tribal attire.
The event felt more like a pop concert than a political campaign as pop rock bands Neo and RAN and dangdut singer Inul Daratista entertained the crowd before Jokowi and Vice President Ma'ruf Amin took to the stage.
Actor Teuku Zacky, who was among the crowd, said he was grateful for Jokowi's win in April's presidential election. "I am happy, everyone is happy, we're celebrating his win with prayers," he told the Jakarta Globe.
"The event was great, the [president's] speech was very on point. His 'Indonesian Vision' was awesome, I hope it all comes true," 59-year-old Della Agustina from Jakarta said.
Akmal Iskandar Alam, the chairman of the Eastern Indonesia Alliance, said he brought a group of 40 Jokowi supporters from North Maluku to the event.
"We came all the way here to get a chance to meet Jokowi. North Maluku as a region has often been left behind [in development]. We want Jokowi to pay more attention to us," Akmal said.
He said North Maluku especially needs price regulation for its premier commodity, copra or dried coconut kernels.
Jokowi's so-called Indonesian Vision contains five promises to overhaul the country's infrastructure, human capital, investment climate, bureaucracy and state budget. The president also promised to fight off creeping intolerance in the country.
