Jakarta. Army Sergeant Miftakfur was killed and another soldier was injured during a gunfight with an armed group on the border between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea on Monday morning. The Papua Police have blamed the Free Papua Organization, or OPM, for the killings.

The injured Private Juwandy was taken to the Marthen Indey Hospital, Cendrawasih Military Command spokesman Col. Eko Daryanto said on Monday.

The soldiers were with a border task force team delivering supplies to an army shelter in Kali Asin in Papua's Keerom district when they were attacked, according to Eko.

The body of Sergeant Miftakfur will be flown to Semarang, Central Java, before being buried in his hometown in Demak.

Papua Police Chief Insp. Gen. Paulus Waterpau said an OPM group led by Jefri Pagawak and Jemi Wenda was responsible for the attack. Jemi is a son of Matias Wenda, an OPM leader currently based in Bewani in Papua New Guinea.

"The two men and four other OPM members used three guns to attack the soldiers, killing one of them," Paulus said on Monday.

A team made up of Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Police officers has been despatched to catch the attackers.

Paulus said 10 military and police officers were killed in gunfights with armed criminal groups in Papua in 2019.

Police also blamed these groups for killing 10 civilians in Indonesia's troubled easternmost province last year.
