Jakarta. Indonesia reported 678 confirmed cases of coronavirus on Friday, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 25,216 in the toughest week since the outbreak began in early March.
The figure includes 1,520 deaths and 6,492 recoveries.
In the past seven days, there were 4,417 cases, the most since first cases were identified on March 2 and slightly above the 4,300 cases in the previous seven-day period – when daily cases peaked at 973 on May 21.
National Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Achmad Yurianto said eight provinces reported no new cases in the past 24 hours: Aceh, Bangka Belitung, West Sumatra, Jambi, North Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi and West Sulawesi.
Aceh, on the northern tip of the Sumatra Island, has only 20 confirmed cases including one death and 17 recoveries to become the least affected province so far.
Five provinces – Riau Islands, Gorontalo, Yogyakarta, Bengkulu and Southeast Sulawesi – reported three new cases or fewer on Friday.
"Several provinces have been experiencing a steadily declining rate [of new infections] by up to more than 50 percent of their peaks," Achmad said.
Of the country's 514 districts and cities, 100 have zero case.
Jakarta, the hardest hit by the outbreak, saw the highest case rise in the day with 125 new cases to bring the city's total to 7,126, including 509 deaths.
East Java, the new epicenter of the Indonesian outbreak, reported the second-highest number of new cases with 101 to take its overall tally to 4,414 cases.
Achmad said the number of probable cases at hospitals currently stood at 12,499, while more than 49,000 people who are not hospitalized remain under surveillance for suspected infection.
