Jakarta. Police said a man and a woman arrested for an attack on Chief Security Minister Wiranto in Pandeglang, Banten, on Thursday, may be linked to the Islamic State militant group.
Based on their identity cards, the male suspect has been identified as Syahril Alamsyah, 31, born in Medan, North Sumatra, and the female suspect as Fitri Andriana Binti Sunarto, 21, from Brebes, Central Java.
According to police, Fitri is a resident of Menes subdistrict in Pandeglang.
National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said the suspects approached Wiranto before the male suspect suddenly stabbed the retired Army general with a sharp instrument while he was walking towards his car next to an open field in Purwaraja village in Menes subdistrict.
The incident occurred shortly before noon.
"It looked like he wanted to shake hands, but then Mr. Wiranto pushed him away," Dedi said.
Menes Police chief Comr. Dariyanto, who was standing next to Wiranto, was also stabbed in the back.
"The two attackers have been arrested, a man and a woman," Dedi said.
A photo provided by local police showed two modified spearheads allegedly used by the attackers.
Wiranto, 72, was in Pandeglang to open Mathla'ul Awal University. He has been admitted to Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital in Jakarta with a stab wound to the abdomen.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo was seen arriving at the hospital on his own at around 4 p.m.
